Level 3 Award in the Installation, Commissioning and Maintenance of Air Source Heat Pump Systems
What is the Award in the Installation, Commissioning and Maintenance of Air Source Heat Pump Systems course?
This level 3 course, developed in association with the Heat Pump Association and MCS, equips heating professionals with the knowledge to install and maintain air source heat pumps.
Learners gain hands-on skills and an understanding of heat pump technology, covering component functions, system design, emitter selection, and system handover.
The course also covers health and safety regulations and best practices for heat pump installations.
This Level 3 Award in the Installation, Commissioning and Maintenance of Air Source Heat Pump Systems course covers a wide range of topics, including:
Module 1 – Core unit in Heat Pump Technology
Module 2 – Air Source unit in Heat Pump Technology
On completion of this course a learner should be able to:
Identify what a heat pump is, the principle of the vapour compression system and system components
Identify the different operational characteristics of each type of heat pump unit and system arrangement
Identify the fundamental principles of hydraulic system design that are common for heat pumps
State the preparatory work required for the installation of an air source heat pump
Install heat pump units (non-refrigeration units)
Test and commission an air source heat pump system (non-refrigerant circuits)
Undertake the routine service and maintenance of an air source heat pump system.
Define fundamental principles of heat pump efficiency and design selection that are common for heat pumps, principles of domestic hot water cylinder selection and system design that are common for heat pumps.
Applicants should hold:
N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Plumbing or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence; or
N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Heating and Ventilating (Domestic Installation) or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence; or
N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Heating and Ventilating (Industrial and Commercial Installation) or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence;
or
N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Oil-Fired Technical Services or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence;
or
N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Gas Installation and Maintenance or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence;
or
Heating installers with experience installing wet central heating systems, evidenced either by Gas Safe (CENWAT), OFTEC (OFT10-105E or OFT15-108W), MCS (Heat Pump or Solar Thermal Hot Water) or HETAS (H004) registration.
The experience in these sectors will normally be 3 years, although where the initial assessment confirms the learner has the necessary skills, knowledge and experience which can be evidenced via RPL assessment this duration may be reduced.
In addition, if not included in the above current certification in relation to:
• WRAS Water Regulations/Water Byelaws or equivalent
