About the course
This short, practical course provides comprehensive training on the design, installation, testing, and inspection of electric vehicle charging points. Learners will develop a sound understanding of the IET Code of Practice for Electric Vehicle Charging Equipment Installation, including the integration of smart technology, load management, and safe isolation procedures.
Training is delivered through a blend of classroom-based theory and hands-on practical assessment using industry-standard EV charging units. Successful candidates will gain a recognised City & Guilds qualification, enabling them to meet the requirements of OZEV (Office for Zero Emission Vehicles) schemes and operate as approved EV charge point installers.
What are the entry requirements?
Candidates must be aged 19+, live in the West Midlands Combined Authority Area and earn less then £34,194 per year. Applicants must hold a Level 3 electrical installation qualification (such as City & Guilds 2365, 2357, or 8202) and a current 18th Edition Wiring Regulations certificate (BS 7671). Candidates should also possess experience in electrical installation and testing. Those without recent qualifications may be asked to complete a short refresher or demonstrate competence through prior experience.
Where can I progress next?
On completion, learners can register with manufacturer or government-approved EV installation schemes and expand into the renewable energy and smart technology sectors. This qualification also provides a pathway to further upskilling in solar PV, battery storage, or integrated energy management systems.
