Traditional Buildings Course.
The Traditional Buildings course is aimed at professionals working with pre-1919 and other traditionally constructed buildings. It explores how older structures perform, how they differ from modern buildings, and how to apply appropriate energy efficiency measures without compromising their fabric, character, or long-term durability.
Course overview.
The Level 3 Award in Energy Efficiency for Older and Traditional Buildings (either ABBE or NOCN) provides essential knowledge for professionals working with historic or traditionally constructed buildings, typically those built before 1919. The course explores how to improve energy efficiency while preserving the unique materials, design, and performance characteristics of these properties.
Older and traditional buildings require a careful, fabric-first approach to retrofit and maintenance. This qualification helps learners recognise the differences between traditional and modern construction, understand the causes of moisture and deterioration, and make informed recommendations that maintain heritage value while reducing energy use.
The qualification is aligned with PAS 2035 and TrustMark requirements, making it highly relevant for those involved in retrofit assessment, coordination, or conservation projects. Delivery is via flexible blended learning: a mix of online study, tutor-led workshops, and case-based exercises designed to reflect real-world practice.
Who this course is for.
This qualification is aimed at professionals involved in retrofit, energy efficiency, or building conservation. It is particularly valuable for:
Retrofit Assessors and Coordinators working on pre-1919 or protected buildings
Surveyors, architects, and building consultants
Energy and heritage advisors seeking to enhance their technical understanding
Tradespeople involved in maintenance or insulation of older buildings
There are no formal entry requirements, although learners should have a basic understanding of building construction or energy efficiency principles. The course is suitable for anyone aged 18 or over.
Course structure & content.
The qualification consists of three mandatory units designed to build a comprehensive understanding of traditional buildings and the practical considerations for improving their energy performance.
Unit 1 – Age, Nature and Characteristics of Older and Traditional Buildings|
Learn how traditional buildings were constructed and maintained, referencing BS 7913. Understand materials, vapour permeability, and the relationship between fabric and performance.
Unit 2 – Assessing Options for Energy Efficiency Measures
Explore insulation, ventilation, and thermal performance. Learn how to evaluate risks and determine appropriate interventions that minimise unintended consequences.
Unit 3 – Making Recommendations and Giving Advice
Develop the ability to select suitable measures and communicate best-practice advice to clients, balancing energy efficiency goals with heritage conservation.
The course is taught through a blend of guided study, tutor-led sessions, and practical case studies. Learners complete exercises that simulate real retrofit assessments of traditional buildings, ensuring a deep understanding of theory and application.
Progression opportunities.
Successful learners can progress to related qualifications including:
Level 3 Certificate in Domestic Energy Assessment and/or Retrofit Assessment
Level 5 Diploma in Retrofit Coordination and Risk Management
NVQ Level 2 and 3 Certificates in Insulation and Building Treatments (relevant pathways)
The course supports development for roles in retrofit, conservation, surveying, and energy consultancy, and is widely recognised by organisations delivering PAS 2035-compliant projects.
Assessment & certification.
Assessment is via a combination of case studies, portfolio evidence, and professional discussion. Learners will demonstrate understanding of building pathology, appropriate interventions, and client communication in retrofit contexts.
On successful completion, learners receive the Level 3 Award in Energy Efficiency for Older and Traditional Buildings from either ABBE or NOCN, both of which are Ofqual-recognised awarding bodies.
Funding & costs.
Places are currently subsidised through the Government’s Warm Homes Skills Programme (WHSP), funded by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ). Eligible learners in England may pay a reduced contribution.
Funded places are limited and offered on a first-come basis. CITB-registered employers may also claim a short-course grant upon completion.
