The training/assessment course is targeting candidates with the following background:
• N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Plumbing or equivalent relevant trade qualification

Candidates must also hold the following qualifications:

• Water Regulations/Water Byelaws

• Unvented Domestic Hot Water Storage Systems

• Energy Efficiency for Domestic Heating

Course Overview
This course has been designed for learners from a heating background (wet central heating systems) and covers the Installation and Maintenance of Air Source Heat Pumps Systems (non-refrigerant circuits).

This qualification has been brought up to date in coalition with the Heat Pump Association and MCS and is designed for learners from a heating background (wet central heating systems) to demonstrate their knowledge in the Installation and Maintenance of Air Source Heat Pumps Systems (non-refrigerant circuits).

Upon successful completion you will be able to apply for membership to the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS), a Competent Person’s Scheme, a professional institute or Trade association.

The course price includes assessment and certification and is VAT exempt.

What will I study?
Core Unit – 2 days:

– What a heat pump is, the principle of the vapour compression system and system components.

– The different operational characteristics of each type of heat pump unit and system arrangement.

– The fundamental principles of heat pump efficiency and design selection that are common for heat pumps. The learner will know the fundamental principles of domestic hot water cylinder selection and system design that are common for heat pumps.

– The fundamental principles of hydraulic system design that are common for heat pumps.

– The fundamental principles of heat pump controls.

– How to plan and prepare for the installation of heat pumps.

– The requirements to install and test heat pump systems.

– The requirements to commission heat pump system installations.

– The requirements to handover heat pump system installations.

– The requirements for the handover of a heat pump installation

– The requirements for routine service and maintenance of a heat pump system installation.

– Undertake fault diagnosis work on a heat pump system installation.

Air Source Unit – 1 day:

– The preparatory work required for the installation of an air source heat pump.

– The common requirements for the installation of an air source heat pump connected to hydraulic emitter circuits.

– Install heat pump units (non-refrigeration units).

– How to test and commission an air source heat pump system (non-refrigerant circuits)

– How to undertake the non-refrigerant circuit routine service and maintenance

How will I be assessed?
This course consists of two theory based assessments and a practical fault finding assessment.
Both theory exams are multiple choice and open book.

Day 2:
– 70 Minute Core Unit Exam: 35 Questions.
Pass rate is 75%

Day 3:
– 20 Minute Air Source Unit Exam: 10 Questions.
Pass rate 70%

How will I be assessed?
The course is assessed via a multiple choice, open book theory assessment.
This is 1 hour 55 minutes and consists of 56 questions.

There is also a practical assessment in which the candidate has to complete a practical job sheet.
