ABOUT THIS NVQ
WHO SHOULD TAKE NVQ LEVEL 2 CAVITY WALL INSULATION?
The Cavity Wall Insulation NVQ course is for experienced workers who meet the recognised occupational standards. The qualification validates your skills and experience in the trade. This NVQ is suitable for insulation installers who work on either new build sites or retrofitting insulation to cavity walls of domestic homes. The qualification is designed for installers who use wool, bead or foam materials.
See the ‘Entry Requirements’ and ‘Assessment Process’ sections for examples of job tasks the assessment process covers. The Onsite Assessment and Training (OSAT) route allows you to achieve your NVQ through workplace assessment at your own speed. On achievement of the Cavity Wall Insulation NVQ Level 2, you will be eligible to apply for your CSCS blue card (Skilled Worker).
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
To undertake a Cavity Wall Insulation NVQ, you must meet the following criteria:
Minimum of three years’ experience working in cavity wall insulation
Must currently be working in the trade
Aged 19+
To ensure you have sufficient experience to complete the qualification, your NVQ assessor will carry out a pre-enrolment skills diagnostic in the following areas:
Cavity wall insulation pre-checks such as appliance and ventilation checks, smoke tests, flu spillage tests and locating external damp-proof courses.
Protecting the property of the customer.
Calibration testing.
Use of PPE and body harnesses.
Application of drill patterns.
Handling insulation blowing machines and repointing after each filling.
Clean-down and ‘housekeeping’.
ASSESSMENT PROCESS
We deliver Cavity Wall Insulation NVQ Level 2 through the Onsite Assessment (OSAT) route. We will assign you an assessor who will work with you for the duration of the course as you build a portfolio of evidence.
Types of evidence may include:
An onsite observation while you work, carried out by your assessor in your workplace
Photographs or videos of you working
References, employer endorsements or witness testimonies verifying your work as an insulation worker
Detailed job logs of work you have completed
A recorded professional discussion with your assessor either face-to-face or over the telephone. Candidates who have not already acquired ACOP certification in Gas Safety Awareness will be asked to demonstrate their knowledge of gas safety in a professional discussion.
Coursework covering the ‘theory’ of cavity wall insulation, and construction health and safety
During your NVQ, your assessor will support you in gathering work based evidence for a range of skills including pre-checks, drilling and filling, and health and safety awareness.
Once your assessor is satisfied you have submitted sufficient evidence, our internal verification team will check your portfolio. They will then claim your NVQ certificate with NOCN.

Although workers can take up to six months or more to achieve their Cavity Wall Insulation NVQ, we find that most complete the qualification in 2 to 3 months.
Ultimately, the qualification will fit around your professional and personal commitments. Work towards it at a speed you feel comfortable.
